My free inquiry project is learning how to sew. I chose this as it is something I have wanted to pick up for a long time, but I haven’t found the time to fit it into my busy schedule. This assignment was the motivation I needed to finally begin on my sewing journey.

My main goal this week was to acquire a sewing machine. Finding a reasonably priced machine was what I imagined to be the hardest obstacle to overcome. As a university student, I don’t often have an extra $200-400 to spend on a new hobby, so I tried to be resourceful in this pursuit. Luckily for me, I remembered that one of my parents’ friends works in collections and often has bizarre items or knows where to find them. On top of this, this same friend has worked as a leather repairman, and he sewed our chair cushions and the seat of my car before. This gave me hope and he was the first person I thought to ask before heading straight to Facebook marketplace. To my surprise, he happened to have a vintage White brand sewing machine just sitting at his home, ready for me to pick up immediately. The part of this project that I had imagined as the most challenging ended up being as simple as sending a text. Not only was the machine free of cost, but he ended up delivering it to my house and helping me set it up.

The next part of my pursuit will be using the machine and familiarizing myself with it. I looked through a couple videos on YouTube and found this one that I will certainly watch more attentively as I begin to use my machine.

Moreover, I also found this video about threading a White brand sewing machine, which looks very similar to mine.

I also found this PDF of a White Sewing Machine User Manual that I will certainly refer to for troubleshooting.

I’m very excited to begin on this journey and track my progress on my blog.
